Inaugural Invitation

Hello to those who may read this, my name is Jericho Fontillas. I am eighteen years old, and I was born and raised in San Jose, California. I recently moved to Vegas around three years ago as a change of pace. Currently taking life step by step, trying to figure out what I really want to pursue as a career. I graduated somewhat early from high school at sixteen and have been working ever since junior year as a server. Being young and wanting change, I've worked at several restaurants and finally quit my job in December to work for a robotics company. Hopefully, this is something I could truly stick to and maybe I'll be a kid still and jump around looking for another job.

My first impression of IS101 was that is that it is a little out of the ordinary. Seeing my professor text my phone number was definitely the start of it. Not saying that I was not weirded out, but it came to be alright. It's honestly nice to see that the professor wants to see his students on top of work while thinking critically without being completely pushy but ultimately leading them into the right direction.

Artificial Intelligence 2.7.11. I have been using this topic ever since the summer of last year. Artificial intelligence intrigues me. Intrigues me to the point where I quit my server job in order to work on robots. In my robotics company, my team has been working on perfecting a robot that makes drinks and interacts with customers. I came in this project during the soft opening for the store in which my team has made sure that the robot pours the right amount of ingredients into a cup in order for the drink not to overfill it and speaks to the customers to entertain them and help them decide on a drink based on their preferences.

  1. I'm pleased to be a little out of the ordinary and thank you for seeing that I want you to stay on top of your work and for you to think critically, Jericho ^_^

Graduated early from high school and changed jobs from server to working for a robotics company right before IS101-3205, Spring 2025 started? Excellent!

Artificial intelligence is definitely an intriguing area and will likely be a area seeing visible evolution for the foreseeable future. Joining such a company at their soft opening is exciting but may bring lucrative opportunities :-)

  2. Hey Jericho! That’s awesome that you graduated early and are already exploring different career paths. Working for a robotics company sounds like an exciting step, especially with your interest in AI, it’s wild how advanced automation and machine learning have become! IS101 definitely has a unique approach, but I agree, it’s cool to have a professor who actively keeps us on track. Your work on the drink-making robot sounds fascinating, and it’s amazing how AI is being used to enhance customer experiences. Looking forward to learning alongside you this semester! ^-^

  3. Hello Jericho! I just like you graduated early, but I didn't graduate from a high school. I graduated from an adult school in California. The reason I went this route is because I was informed that I would graduate earlier, and since I already had a job at 16, it made sense. You're young, and I can already tell you have the right mindset about your goal of not bouncing around. I wish I had that mindset when growing up, and not now that I have 3 children. AI is something interesting and scary at the same time, due to the movie I, Robot. Now, a robot pouring me a drink is very interesting, but I bet it's an expensive experience. Nonetheless, I would still like to try something like that out.

  4. Hi Jericho! I think it's great that you are still figuring out what you want to pursue in life but making the steps to explore new paths while you are young. Working for a robotics company seems like it would be so much fun! A.I. has come so far and it will be such an interesting experience to have a robot serve me drinks. That is even a little weird to think about! IS101 definitely has a unique approach but I have found it to be extremely refreshing that Professor Wu is so invested in his students. I think having him on our side will lead to all of us succeeding in IS101. I wish you all the best in your journey, wherever that may lead you.

  5. Hi Jericho! Working at a robotics company sounds fun and fascinating. I often see those dog-like robots on my social media feeds, and I’m always amazed by the advancements in robotics and the potential it holds for the future. That was an incredible experience you shared about creating a robot that makes drinks and interacts with customers. Let me know if it ever gets featured on Shark Tank and you land a deal with Mark Cuban!

  7. Hello Jericho, it is awesome to hear that you have landed a job in a robotics company. I agree with Mr. Wu going the extra mile to help us achieve the best and that is definitely a first. I was out of the country and got back a day before the start of the semester and Mr. Wu couldn’t contact me, but he didn’t give up and when he finally did reach me, he helped me knock out the first assignment and introductions.

  8. Hi Jericho!

A robotics company sounds like such a rad job, I hope you think it's rad too!

I agree, IS101 was also a bit out of the ordinary for me as well, but I am glad we as a whole are tackling it together!

Quitting your job because of your interest in artificial intelligence and robotics sounds like dedication, right on! I hope to see your robot later in the future at restaurants, I'll get to say that I knew a guy who made one!

  12. Hey Jericho! I too am from California and moved here in 2020 with my family. I can say that the move was a great decision. Considering how AI has blow up over the past year, I'm sure there will be courses about the do's and don'ts.

  15. Hey Jericho,

I also started working full-time in restaurants when I was in high-school! I am now a chef and I went from starting as a cashier at popeyes to working as a chef in a Las Vegas steakhouse. But I have jumped around from so many cooking jobs as well. I believe that you shouldn't be miserable at a job and if you're not happy and it's not giving you what you need in your heart that you should go elsewhere. Don't feel bad about jumping around or trying to figure it all out right now. Your 20s are meant for you to figure it all out, and you're not even there yet! I'm about to be 27 and I still am trying to find my lane, it's all okay.

  16. Hi Jericho,

Very impressive to have graduated high school at 16. It is refreshing to see others in similar situations to me concerned about what to do with their future. That being said it reminds me that I don't have to have it all figured out yet.

  17. Hi Jericho, I agree that IS101 is different from other classes. I haven't had a Professor text me on my phone number. Its encouraging to see that Professor Wu goes an extra step to helping his students succeed.

  18. Hi Jericho, I have a little sister that goes to San Jose state, it’s a pretty nice city, a lot of one-way streets from what I saw too. You’re still young, you have plenty of time to keep looking for what you want to do as a career. That’s true, I feel like professors at CSN are so much more different that the professors I had in California. In California you had to reach them during office hours and email only. Here at CSN at least 3 of my professors asked for our number to reach out to us faster in case of anything. Honestly the robotic industry is growing rapidly. I’m getting into the engineering field because those robots, and machines need fixing and improving. Also working with objects is exciting, it’s better than customer service; at least for me.

  20. Hi Jericho, I really relate to you if I'm being honest. For the majority of my life I had to move a lot, change paths, even my field of study. I honestly think it just makes us have more knowledge, wisdom and experience, really cool to see more people who kind of go through the same things.
